Destination wedding catering, explained

Catering a wedding abroad adds questions a local caterer never has to answer. Here is how it works when a private chef travels to your venue.

Why couples bring their own chef

A traveling chef gives you one person responsible for the food from the first call to the last plate, a menu written for you rather than a set package, and the same standard wherever you marry.

Sourcing locally

The chef builds relationships with local fishermen, farmers and markets before the wedding. Specialist ingredients can be brought in, but the menu should be built around what is best in that place and season.

The kitchen

Villas and estates rarely have a kitchen big enough for a wedding. A temporary field kitchen with ovens, refrigeration, water and power is common. The chef plans it with the venue and a rental company.

The team

The chef leads a team of cooks and service staff hired locally or brought in. Ask how the team is selected, who briefs them and who runs the kitchen on the day.

Timeline

  1. Secure the date with a deposit as soon as the venue is booked.
  2. Agree the menu direction and a tasting.
  3. Confirm guest numbers, dietary needs and the seating plan.
  4. Finalise staffing, rentals and the timeline with your planner.
